Robert A. Lowenstein, M.D. serves as the Medical Director of Community Psychiatric Centers.

He graduated from Columbia College in New York City, and the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. He was trained in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, and continued his education, receiving training in psychoanalysis at the New York Medical College.

His career is marked by many outstanding achievements, including an appointment to the City of New York's Mayoral Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect by then Mayor Ed Koch. Dr. Lowenstein served the city for successive terms from 1978 until 1986. He has also become one of the leading experts in child abuse and neglect.

During his long and distinguished career, Dr. Lowenstein has played crucial roles in medication research trials, studying the effectiveness and safety of medications used to treat ADHD, Depression, and Bipolar Mood Disorders.

He has been dedicated to service, and has worked with many non-profit organization, including the Waston Institute's Board of Directors, since 2001. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Craig House from 1998 to 2001. During his tenure in New York, he served on the Boards of the New York Council on Child Psychiatry, Womanspace, (a shelter for abused women and children), the New Jersey Association for Retarded Children, and The Hudson School.

Dr. Lowenstein is a Custody Evaluator to the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County – Family Division, and is Psychiatric Consultant to the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth, and Families.

Dr. Lowenstein serves on the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Opera.
